  1. Notre Dame Football Recruiting Needs for the Class of 2010 ... 04/06/2009

    04/06/09 13:34:39 | 0 Comments

    Updated 04/06/2009

The 2010 class for Notre Dame looks to feature 24+ athletes based on my scholarship breakdown.

    Quarterback (1-2)
After passing on taking a QB in the class of 2009, the Irish will look to take two (2) QBs out of the class of 2010. At this point Jake Heaps (WA), Nick Montana (CA) and Austin Hinder appear to be the main targets. There's some speculation(hope) that Nick Montana may commit at the Blue and Gold game.

Targets: Jake Heaps (WA), Nick Montana (CA), Austin Hinder (CO)

    Commits: None

    RB/FB (2-3)
A program can never have enough quality runningbacks. Even after hauling in 4 and 5 star RBs the past couple years the Irish have still not found that "go-to" every down back they desire. In all due fairness to the backs, the offensive line shares most of the blame. With only one (1) fullback (and part time James Aldridge) on the current roster I look for Notre Dame take two (2) rb and one (1) fb in the class of 2010.

Targets: Giovanni Bernard (FL), Michael Dyer (AR), Jordan James (CA), FB Zach Zwinaka (MD)

    Commits: None

    Wide Receiver (3)
A position of strength for the Irish, the Irish look to bring in three (3) more quality athletes. With Robby Parris, George West and Barry Gallup likely going into their last season in 2009, Notre Dame needs to maintain the current level of depth and even increase the quality.

Targets: Kadron Boone (FL), Brandon Coleman (MD), Corey Cooper (IL), Bennet Jackson (NJ), Tai-ler Jones (GA), Justin McCay (KS), Kyle Prater (IL),

    Commits: Daniel Smith (video)

    Tight End (0-1)
Another position of strength. Whether or not players such as Jake Golic and Tyler Eiffert actually end up at Tight Ends may determine where the staff wants to go with this position. I would recruit hard for one elite Tight End, if unable to secure a legit 4-5 star Tight End I believe it would be wise to save this scholarship for another position.

    Targets: C.J. Fiedorowicz (IL)

    Commits: None

    Offensive Line (4)
With three (3) players with starting experience (Young, Duncan and Olson) moving on after the 2009 season, I believe it would be wise to stock up on as many quality OL as possible. I'm saying AT LEAST four (4) in the class of 2010. OT Seantrel Henderson out of MN looks like the francise LT that the Irish are looking for.

Targets: Brent Benedict (FL), Chaz Green (FL), Seantrel Henderson (MN), James Hurst (IN), Matt James (OH), Erik Kohler (CA), Brandon Linder (FL), Mark Shuman (VA), James Stone (TN).

    Commits: Christian Lombard

    Defensive Tackle (2)
With no DTs moving on after the 2009 season, the Irish look to stockpile more unproven talenent at the DT position. I believe the Irish need to hit a homerun and make sure at least one of the DTs in the class are in that 5-star "elite" category. With the loss of Denzel McCoy I don't see another DT target with an offer currently.

    Target:

    Commits: None

    Strongside Defensive End (2-3)
With Morrice Richardson, Kallen Wade and Paddy Mullen all potentially being gone after 2009, Notre Dame needs to bring in at least 2 strongside DE type players to back up and compete with Ethan Johnson.

Targets: Darryl Baldwin (OH), T.J. Clemmings (NJ), J.R. Ferguson (MD), Jackson Jeffcoat (TX), Corey Lemonier (FL), Blake Lueders (IN), Brandon Willis (SC),

    Commits: None

    Weakside Defense End (1-2)

Current commit Chris Martin looks like the ideal candidate to become a dominant player at this position. With all due respect to Manti Te'o, if/when Martin signs or enrolls at Notre Dame, this will be the biggest defensive impact player ND has recruited in years. Aside from Martin I would like to bring in (1-2) other player at this position

Targets: Chance Carter (IL), Corey Miller (SC), Owamagbe Odighizuwa (OR), Prince Shembo (NC), Dakota Royer (PA),

    Commits: Chris Martin (CA)

    Outside Linebacker (2)
There's a lot of unproven talent on this roster at the OLB position, aside from moving Brian Smith to OLB, it could be hit or miss at OLB for the 2009 season. With his overall athletic ability, Anthony Barr could be the dream prospect at this position.

Targets: Anthony Barr (CA), V.J. Fehoko (HI), Khairi Fortt (CT), Jordan Hicks (OH), Tony Jefferson (CA), Shaun Lewis (TX),

    Commits: None

    Inside Linebacker (2)
It will be interesting to see if the Irish can land a big time player to compete 2-3 years down the road with Te'o.. With a lot of talented underclassmen and only junior Brian Smith being a proven player, it would be wise to continue to bring in more competition at the ILB position.

Targets: Caleb Lavey (TX), Jeff Luc (FL)

    Commits: None

    Corner (2)
With Rasheon McNeil moving on after 2009 and even though Blanton, Slaugheter, etc. show a lot of potential, you can never have enough corners. I would bring in at least two (2) corners in the class of 2010.

Targets: Spencer Boyd (FL), Lamarcus Joyner (FL), Cody Riggs (FL), Lo Wood (FL),

    Commits: None

    Safety (1-2)
With Sergio Brown and Kyle McCarthy playing out their eligibility after 2009, it really hurt losing out on both Moore and Starling to USC. Without at least (2) freshmen S coming in for the 2010 season, the Irish will be very light at the S position with Harrison Smith and Dan McCarthy being the only real options.

Targets: David Amerson (NC), Sean Parker (CA)

    Commits: None

    Special Teams (0)
With a K, P and Long Snapper in the 2009 class I would hold off a year or two recruiting special teams.

    Targets: None

    Commits: None

Saline, Mich. quarterback Joe Boisture is one of the fastest-rising prospects in the country, earning numerous offers over the last few weeks and attracting national interest. However, the 6-foot-6, 202-pounder has always wanted to get the process over with early and on ...

    Sam Webb: Recruiting
Top football recruits in Michigan for 2010

The state of Michigan is poised to produce one of its best gridiron classes in recent seasons. Colleges from across the country are already setting up shop in the Great Lakes State to try to harvest some of that class of 2010 talent. Meanwhile, Michigan and Michigan State are working feverishly to keep much of it home.

Here is an early look at the 12 best players on Scout.com's "State of Michigan Top 125." According to Scout.com Midwest analyst Allen Trieu, the battle for No. 1 on this list will last well into the season.

    1. QB Devin Gardner, Inkster (6-4, 196, 4.6): Gardner has emerged as one of the mostly heavily-recruited signal callers in the country. The genesis of his climb up the charts coincided with his transfer to Inkster last year.

Spring and summer work with his new coaches and teammates laid the groundwork for strong camp performances at schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and a host of others. Those showings preceded a trip to the prestigious Elite 11 camp in Eugene, Ore.

When fall finally rolled around, Gardner was primed to have a breakout season. He did just that, amassing 1,886 yards, 26 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in the air while also totaling 1,401 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground. His efforts paced Inkster's run to the state title game.

His offer sheet stands at 13 and includes Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and LSU. Noticeably missing, however, is childhood favorite Ohio State. The Buckeyes were eliminated from contention earlier this week after they made Gardner aware of their intent to focus all of their early recruiting attention on Nick Montana, son of former NFL great Joe Montana.

Trieu: "Devin showed as a junior that he could hang in the pocket and win with the pass. Of course, he is still at his best when plays break down and he ad-libs. But he is adding polish to his game with each passing day and that bodes well for his college future."

    2. LB/DE William Gholston, Detroit Southeastern (6-7, 245, 4.6): This cousin of former Cass Tech and Ohio State standout Vernon Gholston has displayed similar freakish ability during his three-year high school career. Gholston first came to the attention of gridiron observers around the city while at Mumford, where he registered an impressive 19 sacks as a sophomore. However, his star went to another level when he transferred to Southeastern last season. Gholston finished the year with 101 tackles, including 22 for loss and 15 sacks to go along with two fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles.

Now he is understandably being courted by programs from across the country. At last check he held offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Iowa, Purdue, Florida, Miami (Fla.), Illinois and Central Michigan.

Trieu: It would be a challenge to find many kids more physically gifted than Will. It is surprising how well he runs and moves for his size, and he never quits on a play. I still think he will have to transition into being a true defensive end in college, but he has a lot of talent."

    3. RB Austin White, Livonia Stevenson (6-0, 180, 4.4): White bested his stellar sophomore performance last year by showing he could drive Stevenson's ship without help from his brothers Myles and Mitchell, both of whom had headed off to Michigan State. The talented youngster rushed 228 times for 1,610 yards and 28 touchdowns, and also hauled in 21 receptions for 310 yards and four more TDs.

A number of programs covet that versatility. Some have even expressed the belief that he could excel as a defensive back. White already holds offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin and Purdue. His Green and White ties run deep, as both his parents are alums and both his brothers are students, but he insisted from the beginning that that will not be the defining factor in his recruitment. His approach thus far definitely backs that up. He has made numerous visits to Michigan and MSU, and he also has traveled to Notre Dame, Iowa and Wisconsin. Apparently that is just the beginning of a very busy itinerary. He is also interested in dropping in on schools that are showing interest from outside the region, like Florida State.

Trieu: "I love the versatility Austin brings. He is excellent in the open field, he can run from an I-formation, from a shotgun, he can split out, he can play in the slot, and he blocks. I don't know that he'll be a workhorse type back in college, but he can help a team in a variety of ways."

    4. LB Max Bullough, Traverse City St. Francis (6-3, 220, 4.6, committed to Michigan State): The name says it all. The Bullough family legacy at MSU made this an extremely tough recruitment for every other program. His father Shane, uncle Chuck, and grandfather Hank all played for the Spartans. Hank also coached in East Lansing.

UCLA, Iowa, and Notre Dame tried to make things interesting, but Bullough announced his allegiance to the Spartans in early October. He then turned his athletic attention back to the football field, where he helped lead his team to the Division 7 state title.

Trieu: "Max is simply a kid you can count on. He won't necessarily make eye-popping highlight-reel plays, but I'll take double-digit tackles every game over that any day. He has a feel for the game and a nose for the ball. You'll be hard-pressed to find many missed tackles from this kid."

    5. CB Dior Mathis, Detroit Cass Tech (5-8, 170, 4.3): Prior to last season, Mathis was considered by many to be a track guy playing football. An offseason of strength work, plus seeking out one-on-one challenges at every summer camp he could get to, was the start of proving otherwise. Mathis added 22 pounds of muscle, but maintained his 10.47 100-meter speed.

The more physically prepared Mathis was an impact player for Cass Tech in 2008. He grabbed eight interceptions and flashed big-play ability on offense en route to helping the Technicians get back to the playoffs. On the recruiting front he was seemingly signed, sealed and delivered for Miami last September, but eventually decided against offering an early verbal pledge. Mathis wants to go through the entire recruiting process and has no shortage of suitors to explore. He holds offers from Michigan, Miami, Iowa, Oregon and Tennessee, but maintains a top four of Florida, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State.

Trieu: "Dior's cover skills are fantastic. His feet, hips and makeup speed are uncanny. He likes to play in your face, even despite his size. I've noticed him getting bigger and stronger, which should help the part of his game that needs the most improvement -- run support. Ultimately, true cover corners are hard to find and Dior has those skills."

    6. DE/TE C.J. Olaniyan, Warren Mott (6-5, 225, 4.7): This jumbo athlete had a breakout season for Warren Mott. He led his team to the playoffs, where it was eliminated by Cass Tech. Along the way, he established himself as a high major prospect. Olaniyan finished the year with 77 tackles from his defensive end spot, including 14 for loss and nine sacks. On offense he hauled in 33 passes for 536 yards and three touchdowns.

He prefers defense on the next level and college coaches seem to agree that that is his optimal position. Olaniyan currently holds offers from Michigan State, Kentucky and Indiana. He is also receiving heavy interest from Michigan, Maryland, Penn State and Iowa.

Trieu: "It is clear that Olaniyan is starting to blow up now, but he has been one of the state's best athletes for the last two seasons. He could play tight end in college, but his pass-rush ability and long frame seem to be best suited for defense. He is still raw, but that is actually scary for opponents."

    7. RB Nick Hill, Chelsea (5-7, 180, 4.5): Hill looks like Mike Hart, is built like Hart and runs like Hart. On the stat sheet, Hill fills things up like Hart. Need proof? Check out his 2008 stats: 2,260 yards and 27 TDs rushing, 19 receptions for 242 yards, and seven kickoff returns for 252 yards and two TDs.

If credentials were all that were needed to get scholarship offers, Hart would've had a ton by the time his senior year began. But like Hart, Hill will have to clear the hurdle in the minds of many college coaches about his size. No one can predict whether the Chelsea star will come close to Hart's enormous dynamism, but he has already proven that he is a book that definitely can't be judged by its cover. Stanford, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan have seen enough to convince them to offer scholarships. Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa and Wisconsin are among those currently showing a great deal of interest.

Trieu: "Hill's measureables may not be prototype, but the rest of his game is. He has great vision and runs with determination. His speed is an underrated part of his repertoire, and he showed as a junior that he had home-run ability. His size may scare some schools off, but he will make them wish it hadn't in a few years."

    8. QB Joe Boisture, Saline (6-6, 200, N/A): Boisture emerged from relative obscurity last year after being knocked out for his entire sophomore campaign. Former Hemlock standout and future Wisconsin Badger Zac Mathias muted the buzz about the 6-6 gunslinger with a hit to his non-throwing elbow during a scrimmage.

The hype began building again when camp season rolled during the spring and summer. During impressive showings at the Purdue quarterback camp and the Elite 11 camp, Boisture was able to demonstrate why so many Flint-area observers were touting him so heavily before he ever took one varsity snap. He carried that strong offseason showing into his junior campaign, where he passed for 1,700 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading Goodrich to an undefeated regular season. He recently transferred to Saline and is the favorite to win that job next year. It's very likely that all of his athletic attention will be focused on that task since his college decision stands a good chance of already being out of the way.

"I plan to make an early decision," Boisture told Scout.com earlier this week. He's visited Pittsburgh and Boston College, and has a trip to Cincinnati scheduled. "So, those are the three schools I'm considering. Hopefully, I can then sit down with my parents and make a decision. I just want to get it out of the way. I mean, this whole recruiting process is long and takes a lot of you."

Trieu: "It will be interesting to see what Boisture does this year. He had a great junior season and showed his talent, but at a smaller level. Watching him on tape though, it is clear he has a great arm and he has the height you want in a quarterback, so he has the requisite tools for the job."

    9. QB Robert Bolden, Orchard Lake St. Mary's (6-4, 197, 4.5): Last season Bolden completed just 72-of-123 passes for 949 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions while adding another 260 yards and three TDs on the ground. Statistically, it's quite obvious that those numbers don't compare favorably with those of Gardner and Boisture.

The reason for the difference? Bolden wasn't asked to pass nearly as much as the others. However, when he was, he came through with big passing games -- 238 yards vs. Warren DeLaSalle, 195 against Davison and 223 against Birmingham Brother Rice. The combination of the upside that is presented by his outstanding athleticism, his impressive showing at camps and combines last summer, and his ability to deliver through the air when called upon has created a compelling case for many schools to extend offers. Michigan State, Central Michigan, Northwestern, Virginia, Duke, Wisconsin, Colorado and most recently Michigan already have. Don't look for a decision anytime soon, though. Bolden plans to carry his recruitment into the fall.

Trieu: "Bolden is as polished a high school quarterback as there is in the Midwest this (class). He has good mechanics and showed improved arm strength as a junior. While he is comfortable in the pocket, he also has good speed and can make throws on the run."

    10. LB Austin Gray, Warren Fitzgerald (6-2, 210, 4.6): Back-to-back productive seasons have made Austin Gray a name to remember on the in-state scene. He followed up his 105-tackle, three-sack sophomore campaign with an equally-impressive 97-tackle, nine-sack showing as a junior. His junior film has proven to be a major catalyst in his recruitment. Multiple programs, including Michigan and Michigan State, began showing increased interest. Others -- Central Michigan, Toledo, Purdue, Indiana and Maryland -- stepped up with offers.

Of those that have extended scholarships, Indiana and Purdue might hold the early edge. Gray was born in Columbia City, Ind., and still has a number of relatives there. The Hoosier fans are plentiful in his family and he also has two cousins that currently attend Purdue.

Trieu: "Gray is a tough kid who can take on blocks, shed them, and find the football. He is good at taking plays head-on and getting up the field. He has good speed and shows ability to play sideline-to-sideline, as well as rush the quarterback. He improved a lot as a junior. That earned him a few offers."

    11. WR Jeremy Jackson, Ann Arbor Huron (6-4, 186, 4.6, committed to Michigan): The son of Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson was a marked man in 2008, but acquitted himself well, hauling in 42 receptions for 620 yards and seven touchdowns. His big body and leaping ability have endeared him to coaches searching for a physical pass catcher that is a frequent mismatch in the red zone.

Michigan was among those that offered early, and to some it may have seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would don the Maize and Blue. That, though, was never a certainty in Jackson's mind. Trips to Texas and Florida over the summer -- along with offers from Florida, Iowa, Stanford, and Wisconsin, among others -- proved that he was serious about exploring options. One of the factors that had prevented Jackson from making his decision even sooner was his uncertainty about whether U-M's new offense would put the ball in the air. After learning more about the system and seeing it in action on the field, he is now a believer.

"I know they're going to throw, especially since they've got these good quarterbacks coming," said Jackson. "I'm just really excited about the offense because I know once you get the quarterback for it they're going to be throwing it. So I just wanted to jump on it."

Trieu: "Jeremy has very good size and great hands. As a junior, he showed more ability to out-position defenders and use his body to make tough catches in traffic. His speed is the only question. His game speed looks to be better than his timed speed, so I think he'll find his niche in college."

    12. CB/RB Mylan Hicks, Detroit Renaissance (5-11, 175, 4.42): Hicks is another player that went from being a relative unknown to a high major target last season. In his first year as a full-time two-way starter, he turned the heads of numerous programs. That was especially true defensively, where he came up with 15 pass breakups and an interception from his cornerback spot.

Size might not be as much of an issue as it had been since he has reportedly added a couple of inches and currently stands 5-11. Only Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Arizona have offered, but Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Michigan and Michigan State (where former teammates Chris Norman and Dana Dixon will be freshmen next year) are showing growing interest.

Trieu: "Hicks has great feet and burst, and that is key for a cornerback. His coverage ability is up there with the best. He will likely climb up the rankings."

  5. Notre Dame Football Recruiting Needs for the Class of 2010

    02/15/09 11:10:27 | 0 Comments

The 2010 class for Notre Dame looks to feature 24+ athletes based on my scholarship breakdown.

    Quarterback (1-2)
After passing on taking a QB in the class of 2009, the Irish will look to take two (2) QBs out of the class of 2010. Based on the early offers, in my opinion it appears Weis and staff are looking to bring in one (1) pro-style QB and one (1) dual threat QB. At this point Jake Heaps (WA) and Devin Gardner (MI) appear to be the main targets.

Targets: Jake Heaps (WA), Devin Gardner (MI)

    Commits: None

    RB/FB (2-3)

    Wide Receiver (3)
A position of strenght for the Irish, the Irish look to bring in three (3) more quality athletes. With Robby Parris, George West and Barry Gallup likely going into their last season in 2009, Notre Dame needs to maintain the current level of depth and even increase the quality.

Targets: Mike Davis (TX), Tai-ler Jones (GA), Kyle Prater (IL), Darius White (TX)

    Commits: Chris Martin (video)

    Outside Linebacker/S (2)
This is for the linebacker spot that seems to be played by safety/olb in this defense, as played by Harrison Smith in 2008 and potentially Zeke Motta in 2009. This spot needs to be athletic enough to cover and strong enough to stop the run. I would attempt to bring in two (2) more athletic linebackes to compete at this position.

Targets: V.J. Fehoko (HI), Khairi Fortt (CT), Jordan Hicks (OH), Tony Jefferson (CA), Justin McCay (TX)

    Commits: None

    Inside Linebacker (2)
It will be interesting to see if the Irish can land a big time player to compete 2-3 years down the road for a spot to play next to Te'o. With a lot of talented underclassmen and only junior Brian Smith being a proven player, it would be wise to continue to bring in more competition at the ILB position.

Targets: Caleb Lavey (TX), Jeff Luc (FL)

On a day normally reserved for class-of-2009 recruits, Chris Martin stole some of the show.

National Signing Day was Wednesday, and Notre Dame had 17 players ink with the program, including five-star linebacker Manti Te'o.

At this time a year from now, Irish head coach Charlie Weis will be expecting a signed letter-of-intent from Chris Martin.

Earlier this morning, the 6-foot-4, 222-pound defensive end from Bishop O'Dowd High in the Oakland, Calif., gave Weis his verbal pledge, picking the Irish over programs like USC, UCLA, Georgia and a slew of other offers.

Martin and his father Steve both confirmed with Irish Eyes that he is indeed verbally committed to Notre Dame, and we will have more from the family soon.

In helping lead his team to a 10-2 record, Martin had roughly 110 tackles, with 20 of those coming for loss including four sacks. As a sophomore, Martin racked up 108 tackles, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions in being named a first-team sophomore all-state selection.

Martin is the third player to give Notre Dame a verbal commitment in the class of 2010, joining five-star offensive tackle Christian Lombard, and four-star receiver Daniel Smith. All three are ranked in Scout.com's top-100.

    Kyle Nichol to Michigan State

Kyle Nichol, Lowell's starting two-year starting quarterback, took over the position from his brother Keith.

It's a trend. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior is following his brother again, this time to Michigan State University. Kyle will be a preferred walk-on at MSU in the fall.

After spending one season as a backup to Sam Bradford at Oklahoma, Keith Nichol transferred to MSU and sat out this season due to the NCAA's transfer rules.

"I personally know the family is excited about the whole thing," Lowell coach Noel Dean said. "Both sons are going to be there together, and working hard for the same program. Playing on a good, strong, competitive team is something that is important for Kyle, he wants to be part of that, and he will be at MSU.

"He knows he is going to have to work extremely hard to get any playing time and to change his status. (MSU coaches) are excited about him, about how he prepares and learns and his athleticism."

It won't be easy at MSU, especially with his brother and Holland Christian's Kirk Cousins battling for the starting job at quarterback next season.

"Kyle is going in with the mindset of a long-term commitment," Dean said. "He has no illusions of playing in his first year there. He's a pretty good athlete. Even if it does not work out at quarterback, if he shows commitment, over time, there is a good chance he will be able to play somewhere else. He could be a defensive back, a slot receiver. He is fast and he is strong and he is athletic."

A member of the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team as a utility player and a first-team all-state Division 1/2 quarterback, Nichol led Lowell to a 23-2 record as a starter.

This past season, Lowell won its third consecutive O-K White Conference title and lost in the Division 2 regionals to Muskegon after an unbeaten regular season.

During those 12 games, Nichol completed 139-of-192 passes for 2,632 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 151 times for 1,155 yards and 16 touchdowns. He never fumbled.

He totaled about 300 yards in offense ever game.

  10. Another star out of Cass Tech ...

    01/26/09 08:04:22 | 0 Comments

The national level recruits coming out of Cass Tech the past few seasons has been amazing. ... 99% of high school football coaches are lucky to have one "big time" kid come through every 10-15 years .... Coach Wilcher at CT has had 6 or 7 in the past 3 seasons.

    Thursday, January 22, 2009
    Sam Webb: Recruiting
Division I powers pursue Cass Tech's speedy Mathis

Detroit Cass Tech has long held a reputation as one of the most talent-rich football pipelines in the state. So consistent is the school's production that many college coaches stop in religiously every year.

Technicians head coach Thomas Wilcher loses William Campbell, Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon from his 2008 playoff team, but his cupboard isn't bare. His 2009 club will also feature a few major Division I prospects, headlined by 5-foot-8, 170-pound cornerback Dior Mathis.

Mathis was known more for his standout track performances his first two years in high school, but that changed in a hurry during his junior season. He had a breakout campaign on the gridiron, grabbing an impressive eight interceptions and also moonlighting as a big-play threat on offense.

"I think it went good this year," Mathis said. "(In 2007) I didn't really do too good. This was my first year playing corner. Just because it was my first year, I think I did pretty good."

Mathis' improvement was largely the product of the great strides he made in the weight room. The 22 pounds of muscle he added during the offseason made him a sturdier presence on the corner and helped him begin shedding the "just a speed guy" label. There are still size and strength gains to be made, but his coach believes he is well on his way to becoming an outstanding prospect.

"I think Dior Mathis is going to be a big-time player," said Wilcher. "He just got a letter to be invited to (next year's) Under Armour (All American) game. That's huge right there. Dior has a lot of (scholarship) offers. I just think he's got to maintain himself, maintain his composure, keep his head straight, and try to really focus on the goal of going to college. Hard work pays off and he has got to be a student-athlete first."

College coaches and scouts share Wilcher's belief in Mathis' potential. They've already seen enough to rank him among the most talented players in his class.

"He's one of the top five to six juniors in the state and I think he could move a tad higher with a good senior season," said Scout.com Midwest analyst Allen Trieu. "His main asset is his sprinter's speed, but he also has very good footwork and the type of fluid hips which are vital for a top cornerback. Despite his lack of great size, he still comes up and puts his hands on receivers. I also love his feisty, competitive attitude. The one area of improvement I see with him is run support."

Opponents often try to take advantage of Mathis' lack of size by running to his side or matching him up with big receivers. It's a challenge that his former teammate and current Michigan player Boubacar Cissoko has had to face throughout his career. Cissoko overcame that challenge en route to becoming an All-America. For Mathis, that is an example of how diminutive stature doesn't always correlate to being overmatched. Cissoko's thirst for physical play manifested itself both in the abandon with which he attacked ball carriers and blockers, and in his willingness to jam receivers. That love for contact is a trait Cissoko tried to pass on to Mathis. Some of it apparently wore off.

"He isn't as big and strong as Boubacar, but they are about the same height," said Trieu. "They share some similarities in that they like to play up on their man and use their hands. Dior is faster straight line, while Boubacar might be a tad better with his footwork. But Dior will tell you Boubacar has something to do with the way he plays. When watching him, it is obvious that there was some influence there."

Said Mathis to Scout.com: "Honestly, it's all about who has the heart. You can be the littlest guy (and still be physical). From watching Boubacar, he doesn't have that much size. He made me work even harder."

Mathis' tenacious mentality and 10.47 100-meter speed were on display at a number of camps and combines over the past year. His ability to stay in the hip pocket of practically every receiver he faced was enough to garner offers from Michigan, Cincinnati, Iowa, Tennessee, Oregon and Miami (Fla.) before the New Year. He gave serious consideration to ending his recruitment early by committing to the Hurricanes, but in the end he thought it more prudent to further evaluate his options.

"It really wasn't the right time and my head wasn't really right," Mathis explained. "I was trying to focus on my grades instead of worrying about football at that time. I had to sit down with my parents, my coach and talk about it. I'm interested in every school that offers me, but there are only a couple of schools that stand out really. Right now those schools are Florida, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State."

Each of those schools will have to work hard to maintain its position as new suitors enter the equation. In Michigan's case, the Wolverines will get a little help from a few of Mathis' classmates. Wolverine commitments Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon aren't shy about sharing their opinions about where they think their young comrade should go.

"Every time they come around, they always tell me, 'Go Blue,' " Mathis said.

As appealing as possibility playing with his high school teammates is, Mathis insists there are other factors that will carry more weight in his final decision.

"The education is first for my parents and my coach," he said. "They always stay on me about that, so education first. The second thing is, am I going to be able to play as a freshman? The third thing is I want to win a national championship. Those are really the main three goals right now going into college. I'm just going to take my time, focus on my grades and wait until my senior year (to make a decision)."

With the Army combine now behind him, Mathis' athletic focus has shifted to the track and to the weight room. The desire to be the best is ample motivation for him to put in the work necessary, but it's not the only source of that he draws from. Three losses to Detroit Southeastern last season, including the 40-0 drubbing in the playoffs, has left with him a sinking feeling he just can't shake.

"That game motivates me a lot," he admitted. "I know what I have to do to push us extra hard and to win."

  13. AFCA proposing an early college football signing day....

Conferences to review AFCA proposal on Thursday

    By Joe Schad
    ESPN.com
    January 11, 2009, 5:35 PM ET

The American Football Coaches Association has forwarded a proposal for an early signing day for college football recruits and it wil be reviewed by conference commissioners this Thursday.

"We're looking for an early signing day in the third week of December," Rob Ianello, Notre Dame assistant and head of the AFCA FBS Assistant Coaches Committee, said at the coaches convention in Nashville. "There are more than 1,000 verbal committments right now, and about 15 per school. Why not sign them? Is it a reservation or a committment? What we're seeing is oversigning and late switches. An earlier signing day would also be cost effective."

Ianello said the large majority of coaches are in favor of a signing day before the traditional one in February.
  14. Another QB decommit for the Wolverines, a spot for Westendorp?

It has confirmed that 6-foot-3 and 179-pound quarterback Shavodrick Beaver of Wichita Falls (TX) Rider High School has switched his commitment from Michigan to the University of Tulsa, after an in-home visit by three Tulsa coaches today. [imagedetails]

That leaves it down to Forcier .... who is probably considered the best of the group anyway.

From what I've read RR keeps telling AJ Westendorp (Holland Christian) that he likes his game ... just doesn't have a spot with 2 QB commits already ... and they wanted him to walk-on ...

Does this open a spot for AJ or do they look elsewhere?

  16. U-M, Alabama, LSU do best to lure Campbell

    Sam Webb: Recruiting
U-M, Alabama, LSU do best to lure Campbell

The long and winding recruiting road is fast approaching an end for Detroit Cass Tech lineman William Campbell. With three official visits now under his belt, the Army All American is just weeks away from announcing his final choice.

Outside of his frequent unofficial visits to Ann Arbor during the fall, Scout.com's No. 16 prospect stayed off the recruiting trail so he could focus on helping his high school team make a run at the state title. That dedication was reflected in his performance, as he notched an impressive 55 tackles from his defensive tackle spot, including 22 for loss and nine sacks.

However, Campbell and the Technicians saw their season come an end earlier than expected when they were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by rival Southeastern. With his final prep campaign in the books, it was time for the coveted youngster to hit the road.

Accompanied by Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher and a few teammates, Campbell's first official visit was to Alabama on Nov. 15.

"Alabama was a lot of fun," Campbell told Scout.com. "I expected Tuscaloosa to be a little town, but it wasn't. It was fun, with a lot to do. The fans are amazing. They don't have any pro teams, so everyone there loves (Alabama)."

The next week Campbell flew solo to Baton Rouge, La. Despite being in attendance for one of LSU's five conference losses, he came away extremely impressed.

"They struggled a bit this year," said Campbell. "It may take a year or two to get back on top, but I'm sure they will.

"It was cool seeing (former Cass Tech and current LSU lineman) Joe (Barksdale) again, but he was busy preparing for a test so I got to hang out with a bunch of other guys, too. We spent a lot of time outside the campus and touring around the city, and that was fun. I liked getting off the campus and checking things out."

    'Will, come to Michigan'

The third leg of Campbell's tour took place last weekend, when he made his way back to Michigan. He was accompanied on that trip not only by his coach, but also by his mother, father, and three current teammates, including Michigan commitments Teric Jones and Thomas Gordon.

"(The Michigan visit) was real fun," he said. "The (Michigan-Duke basketball) game hyped it up a lot. I ran out (on the floor to celebrate) with the crowd."

U-M fans at the game had a not-so-subtle message for the five-star prospect.

"They kept saying 'Will, come to Michigan'... 'Will, come to Michigan,'" he recalled. "They said if I come there, I've only got to stay in those dorms for four months and then I can get an apartment."

Campbell's parents were more interested in other aspects of the non-football side of Michigan, and like their son, they too said their expectations were met.

"I thought the visit went real good," said Campbell's father, William Sassie. "Educationally, I think Michigan stood out a lot. They really put education first.

"As far as the coaching staff went, they were 110 percent for trying to learn what me and his mother want for him as far as education goes. I really don't care what college he goes to. I just want my son to get a good education and graduate. I would love for my son to go to Michigan because it would be close to home, but that's his decision."

Campbell's mother has stressed the importance of academics throughout her son's athletic career. The visit gave her the opportunity to find out whether the Michigan coaches shared that sentiment.

"I grilled Coach (Tony) Dews and Coach Rodriguez," Ms. Campbell admitted. "Coach Dews was a major help because every question I had, he answered, and he answered them in detail. I put the same ones to Rodriguez because sometimes you've got to repeat what you mean. That way I know everybody is on the same page.

"I asked questions over and over and I didn't feel like I was inconveniencing them. I felt like that with a certain other school. I'm not mentioning any name, but I did. I felt like I was taking up (that school's time) and I don't want to feel like that."

    Florida trips on tap

Suffice it to say, U-M's coaches put their best foot forward and now must wait to see if they've done enough to keep the state's No. 1 player home.

"Coach Rodriguez -- he's a good guy," Mr. Sassie said. "As far as what the media says about him -- I think he's a good guy. I think he's a good recruiter. I just feel like everybody should give this man a chance."

Added William: "I like Coach Rich Rodriguez. He's an intense coach and he shows his players a lot of love. I think he'll do great there."

Whether Campbell plans to "do great" with Rodriguez is still a few weeks away from being revealed. Next up for the player is an ACT re-take Saturday, followed by two possible visits to the Sunshine State.

"I'm going to Miami on the 19th and 20th," he said. "I might go to Florida this weekend. I'd go right after the test probably. I'd probably go by myself. I'll talk it about it with Coach Wilcher."

Campbell will announce his decision live on Jan. 3 on NBC during the Army All American game.

  18. New #1 player in the nation per rivals.com

    12/11/08 14:32:18 | 0 Comments

Seems like Matt Barkley has been the #1 player in the nation for this class for 2-3 years now ... well, not anymore

Barkley must have had a bad season as he drops from #1 to #11

    December 10, 2008

    New No. 1 in updated Rivals100 MORE: The 2009 Rivals100 | image The Rivals100: A new No. 1 | The next class: 250 to Watch 2010

The new Rivals100 has been released, and there is a new prospect standing atop the rankings: Rueben Randle of Bastrop, La., replaces quarterback Matt Barkley of Santa Ana, Calif.

Randle, an electrifying 6-foot-3, 195-pound wide receiver prospect, played quarterback this season and led Bastrop to the state semifinals.

"Even though he played out of position at quarterback this year, there isn't more of a sure thing in the 2009 class than Randle," said Barton Simmons, a Rivals.com recruiting analyst. "He has the complete package at receiver with size, speed, hands and elusiveness. We saw what he could do at wide receiver last season, and what he has done at quarterback this season has done nothing but reinforce his athleticism."

As a junior last season, Randle hauled in 55 passes for 1,058 yards and 11 touchdowns.

"Randle is an athlete that is a cross between A.J. Green and Julio Jones," said Barry Every, a national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. "He should have a similar impact at the next level."

Barkley dropped 10 spots to No. 11 overall. He's still the nation's top-rated, pro-style quarterback prospect. Barkley struggled at times this season, throwing 18 interceptions. He completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 2,877 yards and 22 touchdowns.

"Barkley has all the tools, great mechanics and a strong arm," Every said. "But he has struggled with decisions and has just forced too many passes this season. This is something that he must improve at the next level because the defensive backs in the Pac-10 are exponentially better than those he has faced in high school."

Naming a new top prospect in the country is not unprecedented for Rivals.com. It has happened one time before, in 2001.

"We moved Vince Young to No. 1 at midseason," Rivals.com Editor in Chief Bobby Burton said. "I think it's always a fluid decision, but there is a particular scrutiny that comes with the top spot. This year, I think everybody said Barkley was the hands-down top prospect to start, and he may still turn out to be the best in the end. However, his season has just not been representative of what you look for."

Rounding out the Rivals.com top 10 are running back Bryce Brown, linebacker Jelani Jenkins, defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, dual-threat quarterback Russell Shepard, defensive end Devon Kennard, running back Trent Richardson, linebacker Manti Te'o, athlete Patrick Hall and cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick.

Three players made big moves up the Rivals100 and are now five-star prospects. Two are from the southwest in defensive end Alex Okafor from Pfugerville, Texas, and defensive back Janzen Jackson from Lake Charles, La. Okafor and Jackson are Nos. 14 and 16, respectively.

"You're not going to find senior film for the cornerback position that's more impressive than Jackson's," Simmons said. "He is the most physical corner in the country and hits like a safety. He also has legit speed, great ball skills and the hips to be an elite cover man.

"Okafor has continued to transform his body and prove that he is more than just an edge rusher. He's put on some weight and is maturing physically. He is still an explosive pass rusher off of the edge and his dominating senior season has eliminated any doubts about consistency."

The third new five-star player is Andre Debose from Sanford (Fla.) Seminole High School. He now stands at No. 24 overall and is also being moved from wide receiver to athlete because he can do so many things - and beat you in so many ways.

"Debose reminds me of Peter Warrick with more speed," Every said. "This is a guy you want the ball in his hands. He can do so much for you like a Percy Harvin. He's just very reminiscent of Harvin, Warrick and guys like that."

Wide receiver Rodney Smith (No. 62) and athlete Donavan Tate (No. 81) are two new prospects who have emerged in the Rivals100.

Florida leads the way with 15 recruits in the Rivals100. California has 12 prospects and Texas has 10. Georgia is next with six, and Alabama, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and South Carolina all have five. With a handful of all-star games over the next month, however, Rivals.com with revisit the rankings in

  22. Top Michigan Players in the Class of 2010

    11/07/08 14:03:29 | 0 Comments

Rivals put out their list of 250 top players from around the Country in their early class of 2010 250.

Check the link for the full list and here are the Michigan Players listed (A-Z)....

    Joe Boisture
    Goodrich (MI) Goodrich
    QB 6-6/189 list

It's an amazing season for quarterbacks in Michigan, Boisture has quickly proven he's among the best not only in the state but also in the nation. At 6-foot-6 and 189 pounds, Boisture might be considered a true pocket passer, but he does show good athletic ability to move around and create new passing lanes. Early offers have already come in from Boston College and Pittsburgh.

    Robert Bolden
    Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary's
    QB 6-4/195 list

In an amazing 2010 quarterback class in Michigan, many call Bolden the best in the bunch. He thinks he brings a lot of things to the table that make him a solid quarterback. "Confidence, speed, leadership, good mechanics and the ability to remain calm and pull all these things together are what I think allows me to be the best out there," Bolden said.

    Devin Gardner
    Detroit (MI) Inkster
    QB 6-4/195 list

Started his freshmen and sophomore years at U of Detroit Jesuit. Transferred to Inkster in January 2008 and had a very successful junior season. Gardner is a solid passer, but his ability to run when the pocket breaks down is what makes his game even more deadly.

    William Gholston
    Detroit (MI) Southeastern
    DE 6-7/237 list

Gholston's cousin is current New York Jet and 2008 first round draft pick Vernon Gholston, who played his college ball at Ohio State. Much like his cousin was, William has really filled out a lot physically between his sophomore and junior seasons. He's also done a tremendous job in 2008, dominating as a pass rusher from his outside linebacker/defensive end spot.

    Nick Hill
    Chelsea (MI) Chelsea
    RB 5-6/179 list

Last year he put up great numbers with 1,658 yards and 26 touchdowns as a sophomore. He did it again this season, despite everybody game planning around him. Just two weeks ago, Hill exploded for 228 yards and five touchdowns in a 34-28 overtime victory over Temperance Bedford.

    Jeremy Jackson
    Ann Arbor (MI) Huron
    WR 6-4/182 Michigan

Jackson ended the recruiting process early when he committed to Michigan and turned down offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Louisville and others. Jackson has great size at 6-foot-4 and 180-plus pounds. While he might not be a burner, he does find ways to get open. When the ball is thrown his way, he has great hands and can leap up to go get the ball at its highest point.

    Austin White
    Livonia (MI) Stevenson
    ATH 6-0/186 list

At the Columbus NIKE Camp last season, White was the talk of the event. Going against upperclassmen, White destroyed anybody that tried to cover him in one-on-ones. He then carried that over to a very successful junior campaign. Season highs include a 269-yard, four-touchdown performance against Canton Plymouth.

This Saturday several members of the Michigan State recruiting class of 2008 will play their first game in Spartan Stadium. They won't be wearing the Green and White, but they will be indirectly representing Michigan State University. SpartanMag.com has some details on the East vs. West High School All-Star Game.

    image image
    image
Deyo earned his Michigan State offer after a strong performance at the Spartan summer camp.
Four members of the Michigan State recruiting class of 2008 will be participating in the 28th East vs. West Michigan High School All-Star Game. The players include John Deyo of Gull Lake High School, Caulton Ray of Birmingham Brother Rice School, Ethan Ruhland of Lake Orion High School and Glenn Winston of Detroit Denby High School.

Winston, Ray and Ruhland will be playing for the East Squad, while Deyo is the lone Spartan playing for the West Team.

Ray and Winston are expected to provide the East with a formidable rushing attack. Both players had outstanding careers in high school at the running back position, and will be given a shot to play that spot at Michigan State when fall practice begins in August.

Offensive guard Ruhland will be one of the players opening holes for the tandem of Ray and Winston. Ruhland is fully recovered from injuries he suffered during his senior year and is expected to be a key component of the Spartan offensive line in the near future.

Deyo will be anchoring a West offensive line that may use the passing game to counter the East's power run game. Indiana Hoosier Quarterback Adam Follett will lead the West Team. Depending on whether he lines up at guard or tackle, it is possible that Deyo could spend some of his time blocking Michigan 2008 signee Mike Martin of Detroit Catholic Central.

Deyo will be joined on the West offensive line by future Wolverine Rocko Khoury of Traverse City West High School. A guard/tackle combination of Deyo and Khoury could be formidable.

    image image
    image
Glenn Winston will look to show his running skills on Saturday
In addition to the players listed above, several other high-level players will also be participating in Saturday's game. Future Iowa Hawkeye defensive end Jason Semmes of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's will be playing for the East as will prolific pass catcher Jimmy Saros of Grosse Pointe, who is headed to Brown University.

Kickoff for the game is at 2PM. Player introductions will begin at 1:30. The price of admission is $10. The East currently holds a 14-13 advantage in the series.

SpartanMag.com will have coverage of the game and which players stood out later this weekend.
  30. Midland's Maxwell (MSU) Picked for Elite 11

    July 15, 2008

The final selections of the EA Sports Elite 11 were announced earlier this afternoon.

Joining the list of already confirmed players are Tajh Boyd of Hampton (Va.) Phoebus, Raymond Cotton of Fort Meade (Md.) Meade High School, Andrew Maxwell of Midland, Mich., and Bryn Renner of Lorton (Va.) West Springfield.

    AMONG THE ELITE
Here is a look at the list of participants for the 2008 EA Sports Elite 11:
Garrett Gilbert, Austin (Texas) Lake Travis
Richard Brehaut, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos
    Allan Bridgford, Mission Viejo, Calif.
AJ McCarron, Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's
Zach Mettenberger, Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County
    Aaron Murray, Tampa (Fla.) Plant
Tom Savage, Springfield (Pa.) Cardinal O'Hara
    Eugene Smith, Miramar, Fla.
    Tajh Boyd, Hampton (Va.) Phoebus
Raymond Cotton, Fort Meade (Md.) Meade HS
    Andrew Maxwell, Midland, Mich.
Bryn Renner, Lorton (Va.) West Springfield
The list of already announced players include Garrett Gilbert of Austin (Texas) Lake Travis, Richard Brehaut of Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos, Allan Bridgford of Mission Viejo, Calif., AJ McCarron of Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's, Zach Mettenberger of Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County, Aaron Murray of Tampa (Fla.) Plant, Tom Savage of Springfield (Pa.) Cardinal O'Hara and Eugene Smith of Miramar, Fla.

Rivals.com gives high marks to the new additions to the camp.

Boyd is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the No. 124 player in the nation. He began to impress evaluators at the Chapel Hill Nike Camp in May where he earned camp quarterback most valuable player honors. He also threw well at the State College Elite 11 regional camp.

Boyd joins Renner as the seventh Virginia quarterback to make the Elite 11 in its 10 years. It also marks a third consecutive year that two Commonwealth State quarterbacks have been selected to the Elite 11. Boyd committed to West Virginia in March over offers from Boston College, Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and many more.

Cotton is a three-star prospect according to Rivals.com. The 6-foot-4, 216-pounder ranks as the No. 12 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the third best scrambler. He committed to Auburn in early April, turning down offers from Kentucky, Mississippi State, Purdue and Troy.

"This is a big honor," Cotton said. "Being selected to the Elite 11 has always been one of my biggest goals going into my senior season."

Maxwell ranks among the nation's top pro-style passers at No. 11 overall at the position. The 6-foot-3, 192-pounder also ranks as the No. 229 player overall and the No. 6 player in Michigan.

He jumped out to evaluators at the NIKE Camp and the Elite 11 regional camp in Fort Worth. He earned MVP honors for quarterbacks at the event and really impressed camp coaches like Bob Johnson.

"He says that he likes my arm strength and how accurate I am when I deliver the ball," Maxwell said. "They also say that they like the way I have an idea where I want to go with the ball on every play."

Renner, a North Carolina, was the biggest surprise at the Las Vegas Elite 11 regional camp. The nation's No. 16 dual-threat quarterback was an all-state receiver as a sophomore and last year he threw for 2,749 yards and 32 touchdowns.

However, his resume wasn't as big as others in the nation. That changed after his strong day in Las Vegas. Along with looking great in drill work, Renner, who is a North Carolina commitment, won the EA Sports Golden Gun award for the most accurate passer in the camp.

"I stayed within myself and threw it smooth," Renner said.

"I didn't try to do too much fancy. I just had to get the ball in the targets. I stayed within myself in the drills, did what the coaches asked of me and tried to have the best day that I could."

Rivals.com will have full coverage of the camp, which starts next Monday, July 21 and continues through the 24th at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Calif. To qualify for this event passers had to attend either a NIKE Camp or an Elite 11 regional camp.

  31. Dream Comes True For Watt - Free Rivals Story

Charlie Weis probably didn't mind this vacation time out.

Watt ranks as the second highest rated prospect in this class.
On the beach with his son Sunday afternoon, the Notre Dame head coach received a call from elite offensive guard Chris Watt with news the Irish program had been working to hear for nearly six months. The four-star prospect from Glen Ellyn, Ill., wanted to take himself off the market with a commitment to Notre Dame.

"He had heard that I wanted to talk to him," Watt said. "He was very excited about the commitment. He was thrilled."

Watt's decision to select Notre Dame over Ohio State became official today, but the 6-foot-3, 280-pound prospect began the process of committing to the Irish two days ago when he tracked down recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello. Watt let Ianello know he wanted to be a part of the Notre Dame program, meaning the only move left was to phone Weis.

Watt is Notre Dame's 12th commitment and the second on the offensive line alongside guard Alex Bullard. Those two figure to be practicing together often in coming seasons.

"That's what the plan is for right now, definitely offensive guard," Watt said. "I'm going to try to come in and compete there. I'm open to them having me play any position."

Watt also ranks as the second highest rated prospect in this developing class behind five-star running back Cierre Wood. Yet in terms of heated recruitments, nobody beats the Chicagoland prospect.

The latest Irish pledge was almost a fixture in South Bend during the past six months, hitting junior days, spring practices and summer workouts. He was doing much of the same at Ohio State too, leaving Watt conflicted about where he wanted to spend his college career.

Watt eventually made a list of pros and cons for his favorites, then handed it to his parents. Watt said at times he was leaning to Ohio State while his father liked Notre Dame.

"They were happy with whatever decision I made," Watt said. "They were kind of surprised when I told them and I handed them the phone to talk to coach Ianello. They weren't expecting a commitment. They were happy.

"It just hit me that Notre Dame was where I wanted to be."

The Irish roster helped that cause, specifically freshman Sean Cwynar. Watt also credited Dayne Crist, Trevor Robinson and Brandon Walker for making him feel welcome on the Irish roster during multiple stops in South Bend.

"The people surrounding Notre Dame really got to me," Watt said. "Obviously all the kids there I just really liked hanging out with. Sean showed me around and really let me know what the program is really about and that there's no B.S. there."

The recruiting process probably held some of that for Watt, who said he enjoyed the college courtship for the most part but that it also became tiresome.

"It was an interesting process and kind of a learning process going through it," Watt said. "I really didn't know what I was going to do. Every coach you met you liked better than the last one. Each school you saw you liked better than the last one."

Selecting between Weis and Jim Tressel gave Watt two renowned options.

"You can't beat Coach Tressel. He's a phenomenal person and a good coach, but it's about the overall school and everything," Watt said. "Coach Weis is an NFL coach and to play for him is a very big step. Just the overall package of everything, being close to home and being in a big-time football program with really good academics, that was all big.

"It's always been a dream school."

  33. Irish take another Tight End?

    07/08/08 08:46:39 | 0 Comments

I have not seen any articles but rivals now list's Fort Wayne, IN TE Tyler Eifert as a Notre Dame Commitment.

I'm very surprised to see ND take another TE in this class, especially with this being a "smaller" class that may top out around 20 commitments. ... and Tight End not being one of the bigger needs.

In fact I would not have been upset had ND completely passed on the TE position this year after the players they have brought in the past 2 years... but taking 2 TEs?

I thought I read somewhere in the past that ND may be recruiting Eifert as an "athlete" ... I'm not sure what other positions he projects to.

It does not appear he has the speed to be a WR ... possibly put on some weight and end up at DE or LB?

    Tyler Eifert

    Tight end
    Fort Wayne (IN) Bishop Dwenger

    Ht: 6-foot-6
    Wt: 220 lbs
    Forty: 4.62 secs
    Class: 2009 (High School)

    MORE: Class of 2009 Rivals100 | The Rivals250 | Rivals.com Position Rankings | 2008 Team Rankings

It is still relatively early in the recruiting process for the Class of 2009, but several schools are already beginning to fill up their recruiting classes with commitments from some of the nation's top prospects.

Rivals.com national recruiting editor Jeremy Crabtree takes a look at how the top 25 currently stands and gives us his take on those teams' efforts.

This first sampling of the team rankings is based strictly on rated high school players - neither junior college nor prep school prospects have been ranked at this time.

    Team rankings top 25
    1. Ohio State
    2009 total commits: 23
    Headliner: Dorian Bell
    2008 class rank: 4
The Buckeyes have assembled the nation's best class with one five-star commitment and 16 four-star pledges. They also have a whopping 23 commitments, the most in the nation. But the class isn't just about quantity. It's about quality. Five-star linebacker Dorian Bell is a major catch, as are Jamie Wood, Justin Green and C.J. Barnett.
    2. USC
    2009 total commits: 14
    Headliner: Matt Barkley
    2008 class rank: 8
The Trojans are in a familiar spot - near the top of the recruiting rankings. The class is headlined by the nation's No. 1 player, quarterback Matt Barkley, but he's not the only future star. Five-star prospect Vontaze Burfict is a headhunter at linebacker, two-way star Randall Carroll is one of the nation's fastest players and some insiders believe five-star athlete Patrick Hall is the best prospect in the class - including Barkley. USC also has reloaded at receiver.
    3. Texas
    2009 total commits: 19
    Headliner: Garrett Gilbert
    2008 class rank: 14
The Longhorns are always near the top of the rankings at the start and at the finish, so it's no surprise to see them at No. 3 now. The class features one five-star player, 11 four-star prospects and seven three-star guys. Five-star quarterback Garrett Gilbert is back from an injury that has kept him on the shelf for a while, and he should have a big senior season. End Alex Okafor is one of the best defensive players in the nation. Texas has gone heavy on defense early and has landed some quality players, especially at tackle with Calvin Howell and Derek Johnson.
    4. Michigan
    2009 total commits: 12
    Headliner: William Campbell
    2008 class rank: 10
Who said Rich Rodriguez was going to struggle recruiting top players to Ann Arbor? After seeing what he was able to do down the stretch - and then to start off this way - there should be no doubt that he's going to be a successful recruiter in the Big Ten. Michigan's class is only 12 deep at this point, but it has top-shelf recruits. Five-star defensive tackle William Campbell has been as impressive as anybody in the nation this offseason. The Wolverines have added play-making receivers for the future with Bryce McNeal and Dewayne Peace. Running back looks to be solid for the future, too, with Jeremy Gallon and Fitzgerald Toussaint on board.
    5. LSU
    2009 total commits: 13
    Headliner: Russell Shepard
    2008 class rank: 11
The Tigers always are a factor when it comes to national recruiting rankings, so it's no shocker to see LSU at No. 5. The 13 players include one of the best players to come out of Houston since Vince Young in quarterback Russell Shepard. The Tigers also have done a lot of damage in Texas with the additions of four-star athlete Dexter Pratt and four-star defensive end Michael Brockers. They've also cleaned up in their backyard with big pledges from cornerback Janzen Jackson, offensive lineman Chris Faulk and running back Michael Ford. What's also impressive is that LSU continues to go into rival SEC schools' territories and do damage.
    6. Florida State
    2009 total commits: 12
    Headliner: Jacobbi McDaniel
    2008 class rank: 9
The Seminoles are off to a solid start. Five-star defensive tackle Jacobbi McDaniel is one of the most dominating players in the nation, and offensive standouts such as four-star prospects Willie Downs, Chris Thompson and Willie Haulstead give this class plenty of punch. FSU also has a pledge from arguably the nation's top kicker in Dustin Hopkins. FSU fans have to be pleased with the way things have started.
    7. Georgia
    2009 total commits: 11
    Headliner: Aaron Murray
    2008 class rank: 7
Georgia again has done a great job landing many of the top players in its backyard, such as four-star offensive lineman Chris Burnette, four-star running back Washaun Ealey and four-star defensive tackle Abry Jones. But what makes this class even more special is Georgia's ability to go out and pull in highly touted quarterback Aaron Murray out of Florida. Georgia also landed a potential star in four-star offensive lineman Austin Long out of Memphis.
    8. Clemson
    2009 total commits: 10
    Headliner: Craig Loston
    2008 class rank: 12
The Tigers continue to do wonders on the recruiting front, and not just in their home state. What also gives this class a nice early boost is the commitment from the nation's No. 1 safety prospect, Craig Loston, from Houston. In-state, Clemson has scored four-star pledges from Malliciah Goodman, DeVonte Holloman and J.K. Jay. There's still plenty of work to do - there are just 10 commitments - but it's a good start.
    9. Oklahoma
    2009 total commits: 14
    Headliner: Ronnell Lewis
    2008 class rank: 6
While this group might not contain the typical star power we've seen in years past for the Sooners, this group still is solid enough to rank in the top 10. The Sooners have 14 commitments, headlined by eight-man star Ronnell Lewis, Las Vegas defensive end Justin Chaisson and cover man Steve Williams. Insiders also are excited about the linebacker class of Lewis, Tom Wort, Jaydan Bird, Gus Jones and Brandon Mahoney.
    10. Michigan State
    2009 total commits: 9
    Headliner: Edwin Baker
    2008 class rank: 47
For all the headlines that have been grabbed in Columbus and Ann Arbor, Mark Dantonio and the Spartans have been overlooked a bit. Michigan State has tapped into the in-state talent in one of the deepest years in Michigan in recent memory. Running back Edwin Baker and linebacker Chris Norman are outstanding players. But when you see other talented guys such as Andrew Maxwell, Blake Treadwell, Larry Caper and Donald Spencer aboard, you know things are going well. Michigan State also will do well in Ohio this season, as evidenced by the addition of fast-rising receiver Patrick White.
    11. Rutgers
    2009 total commits: 18
    Headliner: Tom Savage
    2008 class rank: 46
The Scarlet Knights have done a tremendous job of reeling in some of the top talent in the East. It's a large class so far - 18 commitments - and it should be fun to see where Rutgers finishes with a late run of talent from the South.
    12. Texas A&M
    2009 total commits: 17
    Headliner: Ivory Wade
    2008 class rank: 16
A&M has 18 commitments and the class is loaded with help on the offensive line and in the secondary. The Aggies should close strong if they show signs of progress on the field.
    13. Florida
    2009 total commits: 7
    Headliner: Nick Alajajian
    2008 class rank: 3
This probably is only a temporary spot for the Gators - there just is too much talent interested in playing in The Swamp for UF not to finish in the top 10. The early class of seven is flat-out scary.
    14. Tennessee
    2009 total commits: 11
    Headliner: Josh Nunes
    2008 class rank: 35
Nobody in the SEC gets into recruiting more than Phillip Fulmer. UT's class of 11 features two solid quarterbacks, tremendous depth at running back and a solid offensive line group.
    15. Mississippi State
    2009 total commits: 10
    Headliner: Fletcher Cox
    2008 class rank: 44
The days of Mississippi State being down seem to be over. The Bulldogs have improved on the field and now they are making strides on the recruiting front. The defensive class so far is special.
    16. Miami
    2009 total commits: 8
    Headliner: Bryce Brown
    2008 class rank: 5
The Hurricanes have just eight commitments, but it's a really nice start. Expect Miami to climb the charts as things go deeper into the season, especially with the way it has had success in south Florida recently.
    17. North Carolina
    2009 total commits: 12
    Headliner: Donte Moss
    2008 class rank: 32
UNC has 12 pledges, and what it has done on defense has been impressive. Two solid defensive backs, a standout linebacker and stars on the defensive line make this a great start for the Heels.
    18. Virginia
    2009 total commits: 18
    Headliner: Dominique Wallace
    2008 class rank: 61
Virginia has 18 commitments, including some who aren't ranked yet. But the ones that are ranked should help boost the talent on campus quickly, especially on defense.
    19. Penn State
    2009 total commits: 12
    Headliner: Eric Shrive
    2008 class rank: 43
The class of 13 commitments is loaded with some big-time talent on defense. The defensive back class should rank among the nation's best, and plenty of help on the offensive line is on the way.
    20. Notre Dame
    2009 total commits: 9
    Headliner: Cierre Wood
    2008 class rank: 2
Notre Dame should close strong, and its current class of nine commitments is solid. A good start has been made at linebacker and defensive tackle, and the committed running backs have chances to be special for the Irish.
    21. West Virginia
    2009 total commits: 11
    Headliner: Tajh Boyd
    2008 class rank: 42
WVU's class hasn't been talked about, but there is plenty of offensive firepower - which should help keep the Mountaineers near the top of the rankings.
    22. UCLA
    2009 total commits: 7
    Headliner: Richard Brehaut
    2008 class rank: 13
The Bruins took a hit when Byron Moore decommitted in favor of USC, but UCLA still is off to a nice start. The defensive back class definitely is one of the nation's best so far.
    23. Auburn
    2009 total commits: 14
    Headliner: Rodney Scott
    2008 class rank: 20
The Tigers' class of 17 players definitely is defense-oriented. Auburn always does a great job of finding - and developing - defensive talent, and this group should be no exception. Watch out for unranked Reggie Taylor. He's a potential star.
    24. Stanford
    2009 total commits: 7
    Headliner: Shayne Skov
    2008 class rank: 50
Quietly, Jim Harbaugh is putting together one of the nation's best classes. Much as with West Virginia, nobody is talking about Stanford. But things definitely look like they're on the way up in Palo Alto.
    25. Alabama
    2009 total commits: 8
    Headliner: Trent Richardson
    2008 class rank: 1
Last year's recruiting national champions start off at No. 25 in the first edition of the rankings. The offensive line class is solid, and the Tide look to have their quarterback and running backs of the future.
    JUST MISSED:
Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, USF, Georgia Tech, TCU and Texas Tech. Missouri and Kansas have put together the best classes in the Big 12 North, which isn't a big surprise based on last season's results. Wisconsin has been on a nice run lately after a strong group of players attended the Badgers' camp. USF continues to be one of the nation's most overlooked programs, but Jim Leavitt continues to bring in top talent in Tampa. Georgia Tech has done a nice job locally and added plenty of offensive playmakers. TCU and Texas Tech have done a nice job of keeping in-state talent at home.

We'll see ... with Beaver still there and I think Forcier still has some interest ... I don't think it would be a devastating loss if he decided to go elsewhere ... .

I always think it's interesting when the parties decline to comment on such cases. If Newsome was 100% committed, he could have easily just stated that he was and is "100% committed to the Michigan Wolverines"
